Just my two cents.
Perhaps suffering is true reality. I think this is so. Everything above that base state of suffering just is not true. It is not reality. Shouldn't our lives be based around the lowliest of the low, the most suffering of all people? Shouldn't that be our goal, to even debase ourselves until that point so that we might share in true reality? Why is our privileged status, as American Princetonians with a bright future, why does this blind us so convincingly? We convince ourselves in human conceit to think that we are actually deserving of all this, of wealth, of a successful future. The modern man assures us with beguiling persuasion, "You can become successful, then help others. If you are successful, you can help people more!" This is fundamentally wrong, it is error, it is false reality, and it is sin. We should help others and damn our own success. Don't you know that your success is immaterial to God's plan? God can raise up children of Abraham from stones, so what is this business about personal success? I don't understand, if you do, please tell me convincingly. Mother Teresa said something to this effect, "We don't need your money, we need you, your time, your life." To be labourers in a ripe vineyard.

The Christ commands, "Give up all you have and come follow me." and "Whoever puts his hands on the plow then looks back is not worthy for my Kingdom." The person who is suffering most, is the most important. This is inverse utilitarianism. Utilitarianism says "Bring about the best future and minimize all frustration." Christ says, "Maximize your relief to suffering, and don't worry about the future." I think. Or maybe I'm just crazy. If this doesn't jive with you, feel free to tell me why. I am very interested in what you have to say.
